Project Based Learning The Development of Diverse Communities in Canada
Objective:Students will research, analyze and present findings relating to the development of communities in Canada.
Student Role:In this project, you will:
Tell the story of your group from the time they immigrated to present day.
You will create your own research questions.
You will choose how you want to present you information (iMovie, Think Link, Wiki etc.) and you will be able to add elements of drama (skit), art (posters and pamphlets) or music (jingles or songs)
Elements of the Project: You need 3 things for sure…
1) Research and answer a minimum of 5 of the research questions you have created—use the dot jot form from Ms. Hoggarth or a word document Please make sure that 2 of your questions are answered in paragraph/report form on your Wiki
Then, you can answer the other 3 question in a different way (e.g. one question is a skit, one question is a song etc., iMovie, food, Powerpoint)
You also need to have the following:
2) One (or more) map(s) or charts that show the immigration/settlement of your group 3) One (or more) graph(s) that show the numbers of your group that immigrated (population) or the statistical information of their age, gender etc…
Artistic Elements optional: You may also present your answers with:
A poster or brochure that explains why they came to Canada (e.g. to find a job or to buy land, farm start a new life, escape persecution etc…)
A short skit that demonstrates the good or bad things that your community faced coming to Canada
All skits and podcasts need a storyboard or dialogue transcript given to your teacher for feedback please
Keep in mind that these answers will not appear simply in websites and books! Use all of your resources to find as many facts as possible. Also, trust your research and reading skills---look for key words, clues and boldedsections!
HINT: Another way to look at the Guiding Questions:
1. Think about some of the main reasons why your group of people came to Canada? For example, if you lived somewhere else in the world and had to move, what reasons would you give for moving to Canada?
2. Describe life in your community both in their country of origin and then—in Canada:
Economic circumstances (wealthy or poverty, jobs, earning a living)?
Political circumstances (Was it a free society, peaceful, safe, dangerous)?
Cultural life (traditions, foods, celebrations, language)?
Social aspects of life (How did they live, family structure, friendships, religion, marriage, birth, death, connections with others)?
3. A “BIG IDEA” question: Did your group face any challenges immigrating? E.g. (Chinese head tax, World War, discrimination, famine, disaster)
4. What contributions did they make to the development of Canada? E.g. (Chinese helped build the Canadian Pacific Railway, Ukrainians played a role in settling western Canada)
Other ideas:
Where in Canada does your group live now?
What influences do they have on Canadian culture?
Who are some famous/important member of your community and what are they famous for?
What role will they play in the future of Canada as we head to our 150th birthday as a country?
Do you have any personal connections to your community? If so, give examples of your experiences?
Could you interview someone from your community?

Important Dates/Deadlines: Week of September 28th-October 2nd - Project is introduced, materials are introduced and exploration/research begins
Week(s) of October 5th-15th - Research, preparation of dot jot notes and co-ordination of 5 big questions, conference with teachers October 15th - Individual Dot Jots due
Week of October 15th-November 4th - Production of good, final and polished versions of your reporting and elements November 5th - Final Deadline for Report due

Canada’s Role in the International community: NGO Wiki
Using proper paragraph format, you will create a word document, save it and answer (R.E.C) the “Big Idea” questions:
What is the name of your NGO? Why does Canada belong to this organization?
Describe how your organization helps Canada & Canadians contribute to important global issues.
What types of challenges or problems does your NGO encounter? How does this impact Canada’s reputation around the world?
Locate regions in the world that your organization helps.
You will also be researching 2 (Two) of your own personal discovery questions)…What do you want to know about your NGO?
You will also need to have:
Supporting pictures charts, maps or graphics that help to illustrate the answers to your questions
*Caution: they need to be compatible with our Wiki format and the source needs to be placed in your bibliography
The Writing Style of your Wiki:
3 questions (or more) need to be written in paragraph form
Remember your maps, charts, pictures and graphics
Try adding hyperlinks that “click” and help your readers find more information
What about videos, songs, jingles?
Enrichment Challenge:
Try creating 5 skill testing questions that will test your audience’s understanding of the content in your Wiki
Hint: 1 easy question, 2 medium level questions and 2 challenging questions

Step 2:Full sentences, excellent grammar, solid spelling---notes, pictures, web links and Skill testing questions are typed into a Word Document first (to keep a backup copy)
Step 3: Word Document is copied and pasted into the Wiki
Step 4: Create a bibliography that list the resources, books and websites that you used
